Karin Wolok

DevRel / Community Professional

Karin’s career began in major entertainment and event production companies focused on marketing and consumer experiences. On the side, she was growing an influential women’s empowerment community, eventually journeying into the world of community management in the database space.
Karin successfully built a thriving community at Neo4j, interacting with and motivating community members resulting in the strength of the community being one of the unique selling points of the product. After spending several years there, she moved to StarTree, a stealth startup trying to create a company and community around Apache Pinot.
Karin has been instrumental in scaling both of these, through a combination of strategy and implementation, defining community programs, and creating a foundation for advocacy and engagement.

Turning Users Into Advocates, at Scale

In the open source data space, having a friendly and engaged community behind your product is almost table stakes in 2022. But encouraging those community members to advocate for the product is a challenge on its own. People aren’t going to promote something just because they’ve been asked to do so, they need to feel a deep affinity for it. If the community becomes part of their identity and who they are, it will be hard to stop them spreading the word!

For the last 5 years, Karin has been building programs that turn the most engaged users into advocates, first at Neo4j for the graph database community, and now at StarTree where they’re building a community of real-time analytics enthusiasts. In this talk , Karin will cover strategies and tactics on how to build a program to encourage your users to advocate and how to do it at scale. She’ll share the things that have worked (and those that haven’t!) and you’ll be left with some key takeaways that you can use to build your own community of advocates.
